Activate Charcoal Latte: What to Order on a Coffee Date

Ok, so you’ve had a great Blink Date, you’ve been chatting a bit and you’ve decided to meet face-to-face for a coffee date - congrats!  Now, the tough part, making sure the date goes smoothly so you and your date can focus on each other.  Lucky for you, we’ve got some tips and tricks on how to go from sipping lattes to maybe (??) a second date!

A few things to think about:

  • What type of coffee shop should you meet at?

  • What type of drink do you get?

  • To snack or not to snack?

Ready, set, go!

But wait...  before we dive in, before you go on a coffee date… make sure to caffeinate as you normally would beforehand.  No one wants to be yawning and incoherent for the first 10 minutes of their date.

What type of coffee shop should you meet at?

Maybe you love Dunkin’ (this may be regional), your favorite app has a mermaid on it, or you only drink coffee served by someone with a handle-bar mustache…

Regardless of your personal preference when you’re grabbing coffee solo, you should pick a coffee shop that 1) is reasonably located so both parties can reach it without any issues and 2) has some place for you to sit down and chat (unless you plan to take a stroll after grabbing your drinks, which can be lovely too!)  If you opt for a quaint cafe, make sure you both have the time to wait in line or choose a time of day that won’t involve  a crush of people jonesing for their caffeine fix.

What type of drink do you get?

Drink choice can be tricky.  What you order can have logistical and reputational implications. We all know that people asking for their drinks to be “extra hot” are the type of  people who don’t do the dishes on their night and that getting a latte might result in a milk mustache…  not a great look, unless you're Matthew McConaughey.  With all this in mind, here’s a helpful guide to understanding what your drink order might indicate about you:

  • Drip coffee with no cream or sugar - you have strongly held opinions and you stick with them.  Not only that, but your breath may smell of coffee and prospective partners will need to just deal with it.

  • Latte - you have a playful side and you enjoy nice things.  If you get your latte with oat milk, you may also be lactose intolerant... an important thing for your date to know so they don’t plan for your second date to be at a fondue restaurant.

  • Tea - yuck.  If you're a coffee purist, this may be a red flag… but try not to jump to conclusions.

  • Activated charcoal cappuccino - you’re a healthy person who may or may not be very susceptible to marketing.

To snack or not to snack?

Coffee shops often have a variety of tasty snacks.  When deciding whether to get a snack, keep a couple of things in mind:

  1. Is this a sharing situation?  If it is, you’re facing your first challenge as a potential couple - what to order?  Be flexible and consider trying a snack you might not otherwise order.

  2. Are you a messy eater?  If so, no judgement… just be prepared for your date to find out.

  3. Is this a snack you eat by hand or with silverware?  A snack you can easily break into pieces is a great option for a date.  It lets you keep your attention on your date... and lowers the chance you accidentally stick yourself with a fork. Win win!

Okay, you should now be all set to at least carry out your coffee date.  We can make no guarantees about how it will go - that is up to you! Just remember to have fun and be yourself!
